On Sunday, March 19th, the first ever sport stacking tournament in Japan took place at the Utase Jr. High Sports Center in Chiba. Nearly 120 stackers, ranging in age from 4 to 72 years old participated in the 2006 Japan Sport Stacking Championships.

Stackers from as far as Osaka traveled to the tournament to enter this World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) sanctioned event. International participants including those from Yokosuka Middle School, St. Mary's International School as well as a large group of competitors from the Montessori School of Tokyo had a great time stacking against the clock. All the schools top stackers took home medals and trophies as proof of their stacking excellence. (See complete results here)

Tsuyoshi Seo, a 17-year-old from Kawasaki took home the top spot as Individual All Around Champion with a combined time of 16.23 in the 3-3-3, 3-6-3 and Cycle Stacks! Tsuyoshi out-stacked the competition to win a trip to the U.S. to compete in the World Sport Stacking Championships in Denver, Colorado on April 8, 2006!

With cameras positioned and officials looking on, including special guest Mr. Takaharu Igaya, a representative from Guinness World Records Museum-Tokyo, stackers in all divisions attempted to set their own records in this exciting sport.

Bringing home the championship trophies in this year's Overall 3-3-3 and 3-6-3 stacks was an excited Hikaru Ueno, a 16-year-old from Osaka. Her time of 2.78 seconds in the 3-3-3 edged out Tsuyoshi Seo, who took second place (2.90 seconds) and Yuri Sato, eleven, from Chiba, whose time of 3.22 seconds put her in third place. Hikaru and Tsuyoshi battled again in the 3-6-3 stack, with Hikaru taking the top spot (3.38 seconds) just ahead of Tsuyoshi's 3.52 seconds. Rounding out 3rd place was Kimi Juds, a 13-year-old from the Montessori School of  Tokyo (MST) with a blinding time of 3.76 seconds.

With the fastest Cycle stack of the day, Tsuyoshi Seo took the top spot this round with 9.81 seconds, followed by Kimi Juds (10.68) and third place went to 9-year-old Jack Claar, also from MST, with a impressive time of 11.66 seconds.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Mr. Koichiro Takahashi from United Epic, Inc. was on hand to present a special award of an additional trip to the World Championships in April in Denver, Colorado, USA.
